Need to replace Civil War monuments in Sunnyside Cemetery
The above monuments were stolen from Sunnyside Cemetery which is adjacent to the Long Beach Cemetery on Willow and Orange. They were erected by members of the Long Beach civil war veterans or GAR (Great Army of the Republic) to honor the more than 1,200 civil war veterans buried in these Long Beach cemeteries.
The monuments were cast in bronze and stolen for their metal value. I am working with the curator of the cemetery so that these can be replaced. When we find out how much to replace I will be asking the public to help.
Long Beach is the site of an incredible history related to veterans of the Civil War coming here to start their lives over after the war.
